2024 polls: NPP's Savanna Regional Chair condemns partisan chiefs fuelling tribal sentiments
The New Patriotic Party’s Savanna Regional Chairman, Alhaji Sulemana Iddrisu, popularly known as Professor Kalamonia, has criticised some chiefs in Gonjaland for allegedly engaging in partisan politics by openly campaigning for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama.
Expressing his disapproval, the Chairman noted that these chiefs are reportedly engaging in house-to-house campaigns based on tribalism.
He advised them to remain neutral and respect their traditional roles as custodians of the land.
On December 7, 2024, citizens will be able to freely exercise their voting rights without fear or tribal influence.
In an interview, Alhaji Sulemana Iddrisu warned that chiefs who abandon their neutrality and act like mainstream politicians risk losing public respect and may face consequences.
"Chiefs are supposed to remain neutral when it comes to politics, but some of them have aligned themselves with political party colours," he remarked.
He emphasised that while the NPP in the Savannah Region holds the chiefs of Gonjaland in high regard, the party will not hesitate to address any instances where chiefs are seen publicly engaging in partisan politics.
Alhaji Sulemana Iddrisu commended the Overlord of Gonjaland, His Royal Majesty Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewusoale I, for maintaining neutrality in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections.
He also highlighted the NPP’s perceived competitive advantage in terms of constituency distribution. He explained:
"The NDC Presidential candidate, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, who hails from the Savannah Region, has 7 constituencies in the region, while his running mate, Madam Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman, from the Central Region, has 23 constituencies, making a total of 30 constituencies for the NDC."
"In contrast, the NPP Presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, from the North East Region, has 6 constituencies. The NPP running mate, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, from the Ashanti Region, boasts 47 constituencies, while the President, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, from the Eastern Region, has 33 constituencies, giving the NPP a total of 86 constituencies."
The Regional Chairman reminded citizens of the Savannah Region of the creation of the region under the NPP government, urging them to retain the party in power to complete its ongoing development projects.
