Minority Leader and Co-Chair of the Appointments Committee of Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin has apologised to the Clerk to the Appointments Committee “without equivocation”.

On the floor of Parliament, he noted it was unusual of him to “hide behind my ego to hurt another person” when he knew he was wrong concerning a matter.

The 46-year-old noted “we grow, we learn, we mature” with time, underlining the need to humbly recognise one’s shortcomings and make amends where necessary.

Informed that his “outpour” and “reaction [to] the conduct of our clerk, has resulted in some trauma to the family and the lady in question,” the Effutu MP acknowledged the need to “unreservedly say to the Clerk to the Appointments Committee, Mrs Gifty Jiagge-Gobah, I am sorry”.

To “her lovely husband,” and “to the children” and “to the extended family, those close and dear to her who are affected by my outpour of disappointment in her conduct,” he rendered an apology.

“And to all her colleagues in the parliamentary service, including colleagues who felt that I could have managed the matter better. Mr Speaker, I’m sorry. I again apologise unreservedly. And I know that with all discussions held, we will be able to work better in spite of some reservations that we may have,” Afenyo-Markin added.

Notwithstanding his show of remorse, Afenyo-Markin said his attacks on the clerk’s integrity and professionalism, framed as a misogynistic rant by Ningo-Prampram MP Sam George, was because of a marked difference of the standards the clerk formerly held.

He admitted his reaction marred his genuine concerns.

To illustrate, he recalled times past “when we were kids, somebody would use their eye to provoke you but when you hit, it is that which is seen”.

Afenyo-Markin observed “relationship has been restored,” as he met and worked with the Clerk earlier today, Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

“She and I did not have bad blood,” he said. “She knows the former relationship I had with her in our work.”

Afenyo-Markin infamously blamed the Gifty Jiagge-Gobah for causing the January 30 chaos that broke out on the Appointments Committee during late night vetting by her allegedly partisan facilitation and procedural lapses.
