Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has cautioned members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against internal division, stressing that political power cannot be secured through anger, hostility, or factionalism.

Speaking at the signing of a peace pact ahead of the party’s presidential primary scheduled for January 31, Afenyo-Markin acknowledged the difficulties of being in opposition but urged party faithful to remain disciplined and united.

“Opposition is painful and lonely, but power does not come through anger or division. Power comes through discipline, unity, and sacrifice,” he said at the event held at the Asante Hall of the Alisa Hotel in Accra.

The Effutu MP warned that excessive internal wrangling within the party weakens Parliament’s effectiveness and undermines democratic accountability. According to him, when party members prioritise internal battles over their constitutional responsibilities, the broader national interest suffers.

“When party actors expend energy on internal conflict rather than national oversight, Parliament suffers and governance accountability is undermined,” he stated.

The peace pact signing forms part of efforts by the NPP leadership to ensure a peaceful, credible, and unified presidential primary as the party prepares to select a flagbearer for the upcoming general elections.

Afenyo-Markin’s remarks come amid heightened political activity within the NPP, as aspirants and their supporters intensify campaigns ahead of the January 31 contest. Party elders have repeatedly appealed for restraint, cohesion, and respect for internal democratic processes.

The lawmaker emphasised that unity within the party is essential not only for electoral success but also for maintaining strong opposition oversight in Parliament and protecting Ghana’s democratic institutions.
