Awutu Senya West MP condemns violence at Swedru inter-schools sports event
The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West Constituency in the Central Region, Gizela Tetteh Agbotui, has strongly condemned the violence that disrupted a district-level inter-schools sports competition at Agona Swedru in the Central Region.
The incident, which reportedly stemmed from a feud between students of Swedru Business School and Obrachire Senior High Technical School (OSTECH), left three OSTECH students injured, with one reportedly suffering internal bleeding.
Reacting to the development, the MP called for a thorough police investigation in addition to the internal probe being conducted by the Ghana Education Service (GES).
She urged that individuals found responsible be sanctioned accordingly to deter future occurrences.
Madam Agbotui further proposed the deployment of law enforcement officers to provide security at future inter-school events to prevent similar incidents.
Meanwhile, school heads, students involved in the altercation, and the Central Regional Education Director have been summoned to a meeting with the Ghana Education Service to address the matter.
In response to the incident, the Central Regional Education Directorate has temporarily banned inter-school sports activities across the region as it reviews the situation and formulates preventive measures.
The development has sparked concern among parents and education stakeholders, who are calling for strengthened supervision and enhanced safety protocols at school events.
