Vice President and flagbearer hopeful for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Bawumia

Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia has reacted to the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) announcing a new-found majority in Ghana’s parliament.

Perhaps drawing on the NDC’s proposed 24-hour economic policy, he taunted the John Dramani Mahama-led party for being the majority in parliament “for just 24 hours”.

Dr Bawumia admonished the opposition party and minority to look to the polling stations during the upcoming elections to realise their dreams of becoming the majority in parliament because “you don’t sit in parliament and manufacture a majority for yourself”.

Furthermore, he said, judging from his experience while meeting the electorate on his campaigns around the country, he has seen “the data” proving his party would win the majority in parliament were the 2024 elections held immediately.

He was engaging a large crowd in Nkawkaw on Saturday, October 19, 2024.

“A few days ago, they did something in Parliament and claimed they were the majority side. Anyway, they held the majority for just 24 hours. That is a 24-hour majority. It didn’t last at all. The shortest-lived majority that I know of in history,” Dr Bawumia taunted.

“They should know that if they want a majority, they should come to the polling station. Come to the constituency, win an election, and then go to Parliament. You don’t sit in Parliament and manufacture a majority for yourself.”

Furthermore, the presidential hopeful declared: “We will meet them in the constituencies, and we will meet them at the polling stations. What I can assure you is that, from what I know – I have been to over 200 constituencies, I have campaigned on the ground, I have seen the data – and I can tell you that if we held the elections today, the NPP would have a decisive majority in parliament. There is no doubt about it. If the elections were held today, the NPP would have a decisive majority. Not just a majority, but a decisive majority in Parliament.”
