Speaker Alban Bagbin has warned that the Parliament of Ghana, "under my leadership, will resist any affront on the democracy of Ghana".

Without making reference to any particular issue, Mr Bagbin wrote on Facebook on Thursday, 21 March 2024: "We will not allow a government to undermine the sovereign will of the people expressed through their representatives", particularly that "the values of our people are concerned, we have lost so much of them to colonialism and slave trade that this generation has a divine mandate to protect the remnants of our cultural values and even restore the lost ones."

He said the culture and democracy of Ghana "are supreme that I will do everything legally possible to safeguard them".

Mr Bagbin then encouraged "the government, led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to desist from actions and inactions that attempt to trivialise our democratic practice."

He noted: "We, at the Parliament House, thank all Ghanaians for speaking so loud on this matter and speaking truth to the government."

On Wednesday, 20 March 2024, Mr Bagbin suspended the approval of President Nana Akufo-Addo's ministerial nominees in a tit-for-tat fight following the presidency's decision to hold on to any action on the recently passed anti-LGBTQI bill until the Supreme Court hears two pending interlocutory injunctions on the transmission and signing of the bill.

In a long response to the presidency, Mr Bagbin told parliament on that the house could also not continue with the vetting and approval process since it was caught up in a similar legal tussle.

"I also bring to your attention the receipt of a process from the Courts titled Rockson-Nelson Etse K. Dafeamekpor vrs the Speaker of Parliament and the Attorney-General (Suit no. J1/12/2024) which process was served on the 19th of March 2024 and an injunction motion on notice seeking to restrain the Speaker from proceeding with the vetting and approval of the names of the persons submitted by His Excellency the President until the provisions of the constitution are satisfied", Mr Bagbin announced.

He then announced: "Members, in the light of this process, the House is unable to continue to consider the nominations of His Excellency the President in the 'spirit of upholding the rule of law' until after the determination of the application for interlocutory injunction by the Supreme Court."
