EC lifts media access restrictions at collation centres ahead of Dec. 7 polls
The Electoral Commission (EC) has reversed its earlier directive restricting media access to constituency and regional collation centres during the December 7 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
In a statement issued on Monday, December 2, the EC announced that following internal deliberations and consultations with key media stakeholders, accredited media personnel will now be granted access to constituency and regional collation centres using their existing photo accreditation cards issued by the Commission.
“From Saturday, December 7, 2024, media persons can access Constituency and Regional Collation Centres using their photo accreditation cards issued by the EC,” the statement read.
The EC emphasized its dedication to maintaining transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
It highlighted that the revised accreditation system is aimed at ensuring that media professionals have the necessary access and flexibility to provide comprehensive coverage of the elections.
“The EC is committed to upholding the highest standards of transparency and accountability in its operations. This revised accreditation aims to provide media personnel with greater flexibility and access to key Election Centres, reflecting our commitment to ensuring effective media coverage of the electoral process,” the Commission noted.
The Commission also indicated that arrangements for media access to the National Collation Centre would be communicated soon.
