EC to start compiling new register from June
The Electoral Commission has confirmed to the various political parties that it will commence its intended registration exercise next month despite opposition from some political parties who are seeking to have the exercise halted.
In an Inter-party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting at its headquarters on Wednesday, 27 May 2020, the EC said it intends using 30 days spanning from June to July this year to complete the exercise ahead of the December general elections.
The EC has also rolled out mechanisms to ensure strict adherence to various essential protocols in light of the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the safety of Ghanaians.
Speaking to the media after the IPAC meeting, General Secretary of the NPP, Mr John Boadu, said the party is in agreement with the EC's proposal to roll out its planned activities for the year while dismissing the reservations expressed by some political parties, especially the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), about the process.
An independent presidential aspirant for the 2020 elections, Mr Jacob Osei Yeboah also speaking told Class News after the meeting that there is the need to work on an existing register after every major election, hence his decision to support the EC compile a new register.
He also expressed confidence in the proposed protocols put in place to ensure the safety of officials and potential voters.
