Guan DCE to petition for removal of Electoral Commissioner over irregularities

The District Chief Executive (DCE) of the Guan District Assembly in the Oti Region, Mr. Godfred Korku Kofi, has announced plans to petition for the removal of the Electoral Commissioner, citing electoral misconduct and injustices that have negatively affected his people in the Sankrofi, Akpafo, Lolobi, Likpe(SALL) Constituency.
Mr. Kofi voiced strong concerns over what he described as “electoral gerrymandering,” noting that irregularities during the 2020 elections deprived Guan (formerly SALL) of parliamentary representation.
He stressed that the absence of representation for the past four years under the previous administration had denied the constituency both development opportunities and a democratic voice.
Calling for a critical review of the situation, the DCE urged the government to acknowledge the injustices faced by Guan and consider measures to compensate the constituency for its hardships.
He further condemned the conduct of certain Electoral Commission officials, accusing them of abusing their powers to the detriment of thousands of residents.
According to him, accountability and transparency within electoral institutions are essential to safeguarding democracy.
Mr. Kofi disclosed that he is preparing a formal petition to the appropriate authorities, demanding action against those responsible for the irregularities.
He added that if investigations confirm wrongdoing at the highest levels, the replacement of the Electoral Commissioner should be considered to restore credibility.
Reaffirming his commitment to the people of Guan, the DCE emphasised that electoral reforms are urgently needed to protect citizens’ rights and to prevent a repeat of such issues in future elections.
