Kwesi Ahwoi apologises to Mahama
A prominent figure of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kwesi Ahwoi, has issued an apology to the party's flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, for remarks he made during a reception held in honor of Mr. Mahama's running mate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang.
During his speech at the event, Mr. Ahwoi had advised Prof. Agyemang to prepare herself for the possibility of assuming the presidency, implying that unforeseen circumstances could arise. This remark has sparked controversy within the NDC, with some interpreting it as suggesting that Mr. Mahama might not complete his presidential term if elected.
Responding to the backlash, Mr. Ahwoi took to Facebook to express his regret over the misunderstanding his comments had caused.
He clarified that it was never his intention to insinuate that John Mahama would not serve his full term if elected in the 2024 general elections. He acknowledged that his words were misconstrued and apologised for any distress they may have caused.
Mr. Ahwoi further explained that Prof. Agyemang herself had corrected the misinterpretation during the event, affirming her confidence that Mr. Mahama would win the elections and serve his complete term.
Expressing disappointment that his remarks had overshadowed the otherwise joyful occasion, Mr. Ahwoi extended an unequivocal apology to John Dramani Mahama, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, as well as the leadership and members of the NDC.
“I hereby render an unreserved and unqualified apology to H.E. John Dramani Mahama, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the leadership and rank and file of the great NDC,” he stated.
He urged his colleagues within the party to move past this incident and rally behind the flagbearer in unity to secure victory for the NDC in the December 2024 elections.
