The Member of Parliament for Asene Akroso-Manso and Ranking Member on Parliament’s Energy Committee,  George Aboagye, has taken issue with the recent announcement by the Minister of Energy and Green Transition,  John Abdulai Jinapor, regarding a nationwide power shutdown for maintenance purposes.

Mr. Jinapor had revealed that Ghanaians should expect power outages lasting between 12 to 13 hours in the coming days, as part of ongoing efforts to stabilise the country’s energy sector and improve reliability.

However, Mr. Aboagye has raised concerns over the economic implications of the planned outage, warning that the extended shutdown could lead to substantial revenue losses for both public institutions and private businesses.

While acknowledging the importance of routine maintenance, the opposition MP criticised the government for failing to adopt alternative measures that would ensure uninterrupted power supply during the period.

He stressed that energy sector planning must prioritise minimising disruption, particularly at a time when economic activity remains fragile.

“I am not against maintenance,” Mr. Aboagye stated, “but the government must ensure that critical services and businesses do not suffer avoidable losses as a result of poor planning.”
