My political future lies with Bawumia – Adwoa Safo
Former Dome-Kwabenya legislator Sarah Adwoa Safo has publicly thrown her support behind Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, stating that his leadership represents the foundation of her political path as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) moves toward an important transition.
Speaking to party faithful and delegates, Ms Adwoa Safo called for cohesion, self-assessment and calculated decision-making within the party, declaring that the time has come for Dr Bawumia to lead.
She noted that ambition is a normal part of political life and applies equally to all party members.
“I am in politics, and so is Honourable Kennedy Agyapong,” she said. “Just as he holds his views and aspirations, I also have my own perspectives and I am pursuing my political journey.”
Acknowledging the diverse nature of the NPP, she observed that many delegates are closely connected to the party’s grassroots through family and community ties. While affirming that everyone has the right to express political opinions, she cautioned that leadership choices must be guided by what best serves the party’s future, not by sentiment.
Ms Adwoa Safo also rejected claims that her endorsement of Dr Bawumia stems from animosity toward Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong.
“I bear no ill will toward Honourable Kennedy Agyapong,” she stated, adding that they share two children—a son and a daughter. However, she stressed that leadership decisions within the NPP should not be influenced by personal relationships.
Turning to the party’s recent electoral loss, the former MP urged members to draw lessons from the defeat that has pushed the NPP into opposition.
She pointed out that public perception of favoritism toward relatives and close associates while in office contributed to the party’s setback.
“That error has come at a cost,” she remarked.
Ms Adwoa Safo also highlighted her years of dedication to both the party and the country, questioning whether such experience should be overlooked.
She recalled that she first contested parliamentary elections in 2007 and has remained active in the party since then, serving twelve years in Parliament as well as holding roles such as Deputy Majority Leader, Minister of State in charge of Procurement, and Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection.
Despite acknowledging Mr Agyapong’s contributions to the party, she expressed concern about her own political prospects if he were to secure the NPP leadership and eventually the presidency.
While noting that she has not suggested he would win the race, she posed a hypothetical scenario in which he becomes President and reviews her credentials.
According to her, her professional experience would likely be disregarded under such circumstances, given their personal history.
She argued that appointing her to a ministerial role in that situation would trigger public controversy and would be unlikely to happen.
“For that reason, my political future is directly linked to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia,” she concluded.
