NDC’ll boost women’s leadership, strengthen gender-focused laws – Mahama

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reiterated his commitment to advancing women's representation in Parliament, district assemblies, and leadership roles across key sectors if elected in December’s general elections.
Addressing the NDC Women's Manifesto launch on Monday, 30 September 2024 Mr. Mahama highlighted that gender equality in leadership is not only a moral responsibility but also critical for Ghana’s progress.
"We will increase women’s representation in Parliament, district assemblies, and leadership roles across all sectors. We will do this not only because it is the right thing to do, but also because Ghana needs the best of its human resources," he said.
As part of his broader gender agenda, Mr. Mahama promised to fully implement the Affirmative Action Act of 2024, a landmark piece of legislation designed to boost female participation in politics and governance.
"The Affirmative Action Act of 2024 will ensure that women hold at least 30 per cent of political appointments," Mr. Mahama stated, underscoring the importance of institutionalizing women's empowerment.
In a further bid to safeguard women's rights, the former president committed to enacting the Property Rights of Spouses Bill. This law, he said, will protect women’s property rights within marriage, ensuring equality in asset distribution.
"Marriage unites spouses, and in the event of any unfortunate circumstances, properties such as buildings and farmland should be shared equally. No man should have the authority to evict a woman without her receiving her rightful share," Mr. Mahama stressed.
Additionally, Mr. Mahama announced plans to introduce a Domestic Workers Bill, aimed at protecting vulnerable domestic workers, particularly women, from exploitation and abuse.
