NPP signals court action after losing Ablekuma North in re-run

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced its intention to challenge the Electoral Commission’s (EC) conduct of the Ablekuma North parliamentary re-run in court, following its narrow loss to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn.
Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Joy FM, Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Haruna Mohammed, criticised the decision to hold the re-run, insisting the party had already secured victory in the original December 7, 2024, election.
He claimed the Electoral Commission was aware of the NPP’s win and had no justification to call for a re-run in the first place.
"We were only waiting for the EC to complete the collation from the remaining three polling stations.
The Commission knew the NPP had won. Why then proceed with a re-run?" Mr. Mohammed questioned.
The dispute stems from the December 2024 parliamentary elections in Ablekuma North, which ended in a razor-thin margin between the NPP and the NDC.
Following a joint re-collation exercise involving the EC, NPP, and NDC, the NPP’s candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, was shown to be leading with 32,512 votes—just 48 votes ahead of the NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn, who had 32,464 votes.
However, disruptions at 19 polling stations—affecting more than 6,000 registered voters—prevented the collation of a complete result, prompting the Electoral Commission to schedule a re-run on Friday, July 11, 2025.
The re-run was tightly contested and ultimately resulted in a win for Ewurabena Aubynn of the NDC, sparking protests from the NPP, which now says it will contest the legality of the EC’s decision and the conduct of the vote.
Mr. Mohammed stated that the party will challenge the Electoral Commission’s authority in court, signalling a possible legal battle over the seat.
The Electoral Commission, for its part, has maintained that the re-run was necessary to uphold electoral integrity, given the unresolved issues in the initial vote.
