Otokunor blames NPP apathy for low turnout in Ayawaso East by-election
The Director of Agric and Agribusiness at the Presidency, Dr Peter Boamah Otokunor, has attributed the low voter turnout in the ongoing Ayawaso East Constituency by-election to what he described as a lack of motivation among supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to Dr. Otokunor, NPP supporters appear indifferent towards the election due to low enthusiasm within the party’s rank and file.
He argued that the party’s base is not sufficiently energised to turn out in large numbers like the NDC supporters.
Speaking on The Citizen Show on Accra 100.5 FM hosted by Nana Otu Darko on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, the former Deputy General Secretary of NDC maintained that the NPP is aware that Ayawaso East is traditionally a stronghold of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), which he said may have further dampened the opposition’s motivation.
Despite the low turnout, Dr. Otokunor predicted a decisive victory for the NDC candidate, Baba Jamal, projecting that he would secure between 70 and 80 percent of the total votes cast.
Voting is ongoing across polling stations in the constituency as residents elect a new Member of Parliament to replace the late MP.
