President Mahama vows unyielding fight against galamsey
In a powerful address, President John Dramani Mahama has declared the fight against illegal mining, known as galamsey, a non-negotiable imperative for the nation's survival, stating firmly that the destruction of the environment cannot be the price for building the country's future.
The President issued a special commendation to journalists who risk their safety to expose environmental crimes, singling out Erastus Asare Donkor for his courageous work.
"We cannot destroy our environment while claiming to build our future," the President stated, framing the issue in stark, existential terms.
Outlining a dual strategy, the administration revealed it is moving beyond mere enforcement to proactively creating alternatives.
Key initiatives include the expansion of the "Tree for Life" Reforestation Programme and the recruitment of more Blue Water Guards to protect Ghana's vital river bodies.
The President also issued a stern warning to communities that attack public officials on lawful duties, promising that "firm action" will be taken against such obstructions.
Addressing the youth directly, the President highlighted the National Apprenticeship Programme as a key initiative among several being rolled out to provide sustainable livelihood options, steering them away from environmental destruction.
The address culminated in a resolute personal pledge from the President to the nation: "I assure you, as your President, that I will NEVER give up this fight against illegal mining."
The statement signals a continued, uncompromising stance against galamsey, positioning environmental protection as integral to national development and security.
