Speaker launches $1.6 million parliamentary governance initiative

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has officially launched a landmark $1.6 million initiative aimed at strengthening Ghana’s parliamentary oversight in economic and financial governance.
The new partnership brings together Ghana’s Parliament, the World Bank, and the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in a bid to boost legislative capacity and promote transparency, accountability, and effective economic policymaking.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Speaker Bagbin described the project as a transformative step toward building a more effective and empowered legislature, capable of playing a stronger role in shaping Ghana’s economic future.
“This partnership is a bold step towards making Ghana’s Parliament a model of excellence in Africa.
It reflects our shared commitment to deepening democratic governance and driving national development,” he stated.
The initiative will provide training, technical support, and resources to enhance the skills of Members of Parliament, particularly in areas related to public financial management, economic policy analysis, and budget oversight.
Though the 8th Parliament has faced its fair share of public scrutiny, Speaker Bagbin emphasised that its achievements have laid a strong foundation for this new chapter. He noted that recognising past progress is essential to building on institutional successes.
“This is not just about responding to criticism—it’s about building capacity and creating systems that will serve Ghana for generations to come,” he added.
The initiative is expected to yield long-term benefits by improving the quality of parliamentary debates, strengthening committee work, and ensuring more informed decision-making on key economic issues.
With the launch of this strategic collaboration, Ghana’s Parliament is positioning itself at the forefront of legislative reform and governance excellence in Africa.
