The Minority Caucus in Parliament is pushing for the removal of Sections 207 and 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, insisting the provisions undermine freedom of expression. 

The call follows the conviction and sentencing of TikToker Camilla Alhassan on charges linked to the publication of false information and offensive conduct.

The opposition lawmakers have appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to safeguard citizens’ right to free expression and want the Majority to introduce legislation to strike the two sections from the country’s criminal laws.

Addressing the media, the caucus maintained that the provisions on false publication could be used to intimidate people and discourage them from speaking openly on matters of public interest.

The Minority also called for the immediate discontinuation of the fresh prosecution against Camilla Alhassan and other pending cases brought under the same sections of the law.
