Weija MCE assists Chinese investors to encroach on Panbros Salt Factory lands
Some residents and workers of the Panbros Salt Factory have accused the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Felix Odartey Lamptey and a group of Chinese investors of allegedly attempting to take over portions of the company’s land with the assistance of armed security personnel.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident reportedly occurred earlier this week when a team believed to be working for the investors entered the disputed area with earth-moving equipment, claiming authorisation from the Assembly.
Factory officials have described the development as an act of land encroachment and have called for immediate intervention from the Lands Commission and security agencies to prevent potential conflict.
However, when contacted, the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly denied any wrongdoing, stating that the Assembly was only facilitating discussions related to land use and investment opportunities in the area.
The Panbros Salt Industry, one of Ghana’s oldest salt production companies, has faced several land disputes in recent years due to rapid urban development around the Weija area.
