New iPad Pros might come with a triple-lens camera

Technology
We're all expecting Apple to announce new iPhones with triple cameras in September, but word on the street is the company might update the iPad Pros with the same beefy camera system as well.

According to Japanese Apple rumor blog Macotakara (via 9to5Mac), new 11- and 12-inch iPad Pros might come with three cameras instead of one.

Like the next iPhones, the triple-lens camera would reportedly be housed in a square-shaped camera bump on the rear and consist of a main lens, 2x telephoto lens, and an ultra-wide angle lens.

While Macotakara has been accurate with details on unreleased Apple products in the past, this report from a supply chain source in China only claims there's a "possibility" the new iPad Pros might come with three cameras.

Below is a mockup of what the new iPad Pros might look like with more cameras:

The blog's source also says Apple's rumored 10.2-inch iPad might come with dual rear cameras.

If Macotakara's source is right, it'd mark the first time Apple's upgraded any iPad's rear camera beyond a single lens setup.

Beyond improved image quality for still photos and videos, more cameras could allow Apple to provide improved augmented reality experiences on the tablet.

Apple continues to make advances with AR and new, more powerful cameras would further allow its devices to better combine virtual objects with the real world.

The new iPad Pros and 10.2-inch iPad are rumored to be unveiled in October. The current iPad Pros were completely redesigned in late 2018 with edge-to-edge Liquid Retina displays, Face ID, and a second-generation Apple Pencil that magnetically clips to the side.

With no new designs expected for 2019's iPhones and iPads — they should look very similar to the iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, and iPad Pros — it sure looks like Apple's going to be touting its cameras big time. Here's hoping the cameras can at compete with Google's impressive Night Sight.
