You can soon buy electricity via your mobile phone – Bawumia

Dr Bawumia disclosed that the application will be launched soon

Electricity consumers across the country will, in two weeks’ time, be able to buy credit for their prepaid metres via an application on their mobile phones at their convenience, Vice-President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia has disclosed.

Currently, consumers of electricity who use prepaid metres, have to either go to the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) authorised prepaid vendors to top-up their prepaid metres or do so at the nearest ECG office.

However, the launch of the mobile application, according to Dr Bawumia, would end the inconveniences associated with running out of prepaid units.

Speaking at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology as part of the two-day Government Townhall Meeting and Results Fair in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, on Tuesday, 11 February 2020, Dr Bawumia said: “We have completed a pilot and on 18 February 2020; that is in less than two weeks’ time, I’ll launch a nationwide mobile application that will allow ECG customers to buy units for their metres through their mobile phone at any time.

“So, if it is 2 a.m. in the morning and you have run out of units, you pick your mobile phone, put in the digits and the metre will come on.

“I must add, you'll also be able to buy units for someone else, so, it’s not just for your home."

Dr Bawumia also emphasised the role of digitisation in the Ghanaian economy.

“Digitisation is going to reduce a lot of inefficiency and make life easier for all our people and reduce a lot of corruption in the system,” he added.
