2025 AFCON qualifiers: Otto Addo, Black Stars fail to redeem honour slapped 2:1 by Niger
After the 1:1 draw in Luanda, Angola, Friday, November 15, 2024, Black Stars Coach Otto Addo said in a post-match interview his intention was to "beat [Niger] for our honour to at least get to the third place".
It was not to be as events unfolded poorly when Ghana hosted Niger at the Accra (Ohene Gyan) Sports Stadium, Monday, November 18, 2024.
Niger took the lead in the 22nd minute. In the second half, Ghana responded via Jeremia Afriyie's 67th minute goal. The draw was squashed, however, as Niger regained the lead after the 90th minute.
Before final whistle, Mohammed Kudus earned a penalty but could not hit the net. Thus, even a draw proved elusive for the Black Stars.
Eventually, Ghana went down by 2:1.
In Group F, the West African four-time Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion is the fourth and last.
In their 2025 AFCON qualifiers campaign, Ghana had three draws and lost three games, scoring only three goals.
For the first time in 20 years, the Ghana Black Stars is not going to partake in the AFCON tournament, which in 2025 will happen in Morocco.
