AFCON 2025 qualifiers: Partey left out of Black Stars squad as Ayew takes captaincy

Sports News
Thomas Partey

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has revealed that Thomas Partey, Ghana's captain and influential Arsenal midfielder, will miss the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola and Niger.

Despite Partey’s fitness, the decision followed a private discussion with Addo aimed at safeguarding the player's welfare.

In a statement, Addo clarified that Partey was eager to join the squad, but both agreed on his exclusion, a decision unrelated to any fitness concerns.

“We had a confidential conversation,” Addo shared, noting his commitment to protecting players’ long-term interests.

Partey’s absence has led to a reshuffling of the Black Stars’ leadership, with Jordan Ayew stepping up as captain for the qualifiers.

Addo had initially planned for Partey to guide the team through these decisive matches, but will now look to younger talents, particularly Mohammed Kudus, to embrace additional leadership roles.

Announced on Thursday,7 November 2024, the 25-man squad for the qualifiers features notable players from Europe’s top leagues, including Kudus, Ayew, Antoine Semenyo, and Fatawu Issahaku, all expected to play central roles.

Defender Alexander Djiku will join Kudus in assisting Ayew with leadership duties.

The squad also sees the return of defender Nathaniel Adjei, who has recovered from injury, while Monaco’s Mohammed Salisu will miss the qualifiers due to a hamstring injury. Ghana Premier League talents, including Razak Simpson (Nations FC), Isaac Afful (Samartex), and Emmanuel Antwi (Asante Kotoko), have earned call-ups, showcasing a mix of homegrown and international experience.

Ghana faces a critical path to AFCON qualification, needing wins in both matches against Angola on Friday, 15 November 15 in Luanda and Niger on Monday, 18 November 2024 in Accra to secure a spot in the tournament in Morocco.

Without Partey and Salisu, the qualifiers will test the team’s depth and resolve as they strive to solidify their position in Africa’s elite football tournament.
