African Games: Volunteers fight officials over unpaid allowance
Volunteers for the recently concluded 13th African Games, on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, were embroiled in a dispute with officials over their allowances.
They alleged that officials had withheld their allowances of GHC2,000 each, in addition to their promised transport fare of GHC500 each.
The volunteers claimed that officials had evicted them from their hostels, compelling them to return to their homes.
Despite receiving assurances from officials, the volunteers expressed disappointment as they were denied their allowances. They described this situation as disheartening.
The volunteers were divided into various units, including Protocol and Ceremonies, Transport, Accreditation, Accommodation, Janitorial, Crowd Control, Medical, Logistics and Supply, Games Venue, Catering, and Language Liaison.
There were also protocol and ceremonies volunteers, including flag bearers, placard bearers, and marshals.
It is noteworthy that this was the first time Ghana hosted the games.
