GFA Backs Black Queens coach Kim Björkegren despite WAFCON final slot exit

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has reaffirmed its confidence in Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren, following the team’s narrow semi-final exit at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The Black Queens saw their dream of reaching the final shattered after a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout defeat to tournament hosts Morocco on Tuesday night, after both sides played out a fiercely contested draw.
Despite the heartbreak, the GFA has thrown its full weight behind Coach Björkegren.
In a statement shared via social media, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum praised the team’s resilience and performance, describing it as a proud moment in Ghanaian women’s football.
He highlighted the broader achievement of the squad, particularly their return to the WAFCON semi-finals after a seven-year absence, underscoring the progress made under Björkegren’s leadership.
“The journey has been inspiring. This team has reignited hope, and we are proud of their efforts,” Asante Twum wrote.
The GFA’s message of support signals a strong endorsement of the Swedish tactician, whose tenure has been marked by a renewed sense of purpose and competitiveness within the national women’s team, he concluded.
