'Phobians for life': UK Diplomat Hooman Nouruzi declares unflagging love for Hearts of Oak, eyes Black Stars v England World Cup clash
Hooman Nouruzi, Head of the Political, Security and Governance Team at the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), brought a lighthearted touch to proceedings at the launch of Parliament’s 5-year Corporate Strategic Plan in Accra as he shared his football loyalties.
The UK diplomat cheerfully declared his support for England’s Arsenal and Ghanaian giants Hearts of Oak.
“I’m an Arsenal supporter; we’re very happy at the moment. My other passionate team [is Hearts of Oak], Phobians for life,” he said, raising his right hand in a pledge.
He also noted the anticipation surrounding Ghana’s second Group L match at the FIFA World Cup 2026 against England, choosing not to side with either team ahead of the fixture.
“There’s a big game coming up, the Black Stars vs England in the World Cup. I look forward to that; may the best team win,” Mr Nouruzi added.
Arsenal fans have every reason to be optimistic. The club currently sits at the top of the English Premier League (EPL) table and has progressed to the Carabao Cup final after a 1–0 win over Chelsea, sealing a 4–2 aggregate victory in the semi-final.
Nouruzi fondly spoke of Hearts of Oak, recalling their Democracy Cup triumph in 2025. He joked that his loyalties would be tested this year when the Phobians face Sunderland — the team supported by his father-in-law — admitting the matchup has left him torn.
His remarks provided a relaxed and personable moment at the otherwise formal event, underscoring how football continues to bridge cultures and spark friendly rivalries, even in diplomatic circles.
Meanwhile, Mr Nouruzi's anticipation of a win for Arsenal's February 12 clash with Brentford ended in a one-all draw.
