Qatar '22: Ghana play Uruguay for round-of-16 spot today | Repeat or revenge?

Sports News
Ghana vs Uruguay

The Black Stars of Ghana will later today, Friday, 2 December 2022, be hoping to reach the last 16 of the ongoing World Cup in Qatar when they face a team that have become their arch-rivals in international competitions - Uruguay.

Ghana and Uruguay became rivals after the 2010 World Cup in which Luis Suarez denied the Black Stars a chance in the semi-finals.

The former Liverpool forward handled the ball in the last minute and prevented it from crossing the line resulting in a penalty in favour of Ghana, which Asamoah Gyan missed.

Uruguay went on to qualify for the semi-finals after beating Ghana in the penalty shootout.

With this history on the back of their minds, the Black Stars are hoping for revenge, as a win for team Ghana will see Uruguay exit the competition.

A Black Stars defeat will see Uruguay qualify and an early exit for Ghana.

A draw will, however, be good for Ghana if Portugal beat South Korea in the other Group H game.

Ahead of the crucial game, Suarez has expressed confidence that Uruguay will beat Ghana because they have done it before.

The Black Stars, however, say they do not have revenge in mind but going into the game with a winning mentality to qualify for the next round.

Nonetheless, silently, Ghanaians and the players know this is a must-win game to be dedicated to ex-captain Asamoah Gyan, whose penalty miss denied Ghana the opportunity to be the first and only African country to qualify for the semi-finals of the World Cup.

Arguably, a section of Ghanaians will be happier if the Black Stars kick out Uruguay from the competition and do not make it to the quarterfinals rather than Uruguay beating Ghana again.

The venue is the Al Janoub stadium and 3 PM is the time.

Will it be a repeat or revenge? A question for the gods.
