Record deal: Manchester City complete £65m signing of Ghana star Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth
Manchester City have completed the signing of Ghana international Antoine Semenyo from AFC Bournemouth for £65 million, making it the most expensive transfer involving a Ghanaian footballer.
The English Premier League (EPL) champions activated Semenyo’s release clause earlier this week, and the 26-year-old has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2031.
Semenyo underwent his medical on Thursday, January 8, 2026, a day after scoring the winning goal for Bournemouth against Tottenham Hotspur in what turned out to be his final appearance for the Cherries.
City were the only club to formally trigger the release clause, despite reported interest from Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham in recent months.
Speaking after completing the move, Semenyo expressed his excitement about joining Pep Guardiola’s side.
“I am so proud to have joined Manchester City,” Semenyo said. “This is a club with world-class players, world-class facilities and one of the greatest managers ever. I believe City can take my game to the next level and my best football is still to come.”
The Ghanaian forward joined Bournemouth from Bristol City in January 2023 and went on to make 110 appearances for the club, developing into one of the Premier League’s most dynamic attackers.
During the current season, Semenyo scored 10 league goals, including a brace against Liverpool and a late winner versus Tottenham Hotspur.
Bristol City are set to benefit from the deal, having secured a 20 per cent sell-on clause when they sold Semenyo to Bournemouth for approximately £10 million.
At Manchester City, Semenyo is expected to add pace, strength and versatility to the attacking options, while maintaining his role with the Ghana Black Stars. He has earned more than 30 international caps and represented Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
