Starting GPL Oct. 30'll be difficult – GFA Medical C’ttee Chair
The Chairman of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Medical Committee, Dr Adam Baba, has stated that it is impossible to start the 2020/2021 Ghana Premier League (GPL) on 30 October 2020.
Upon consultations with the GFA, President Nana Akufo-Addo approved the resumption of local football competitions, including the GPL and division one league.
However, Dr Adam Baba told Kumasi-based Kumasi FM that it will be difficult to resume competitive domestic football in late October.
“We can’t start in October. There is no team that can tell you it has started preparations. We need, perhaps, a minimum of four to six weeks,” Dr Baba stated.
According to the GFA medical committee chairman, the needed “four to six weeks” is for clubs that are transferring players and are yet to begin pre-season training to be able to prepare for the 2020/21 season.
Dr Baba further highlighted that, match venues that will fail to comply with the strict coronavirus protocols when local football returns will be sanctioned.
“We’ll propose to the FA that monitoring teams must be at the stadia. We shall propose to the FA for sanctions to be imposed on any venue that fails to adhere to the protocols,” he stated.
The medical doctor said these in reaction to the President’s 17th coronavirus address, in which he approved the re-start of the new season on October 30, 2020.
