Houston Dynamo has revealed that they are considering partnering with a Ghanaian club.

Over the past weekend, just as in 2020, Houston Dynamo in collaboration with the non-profit organisation African Football Development Initiative donated some sports items to two football academies in Ghana, namely; Light Academy & Fortune Academy, as part of the organisation’s project for the year.

The logistics donated to the Adabraka-based academy in Accra included bibs, footballs, face masks, training cones, whistles and many others.

The Founder for the African Football Development Initiative and a representative for FC Houston Dynamo, Mr Thompson Antwi, Friday, January 13, 2023, spoke to Class & Accra Sports about the relevance and motivation behind the initiative.

According to Mr Thompson Antwi who is currently serving as the Head Coach of the University of Houston-Downtown men's club soccer, Houston Dynamo Academy Youth Programs, the gesture is a commitment to helping deprived football communities across Ghana and Africa, as well as assisting young talents live their dream in the game.

“The first time we started this was in 2019, the idea is African Football Development Initiative is a non-profit organization.

“Basically, it is all about, how we can give back to our country [Ghana] and how we can improve the situation here.

“In Ghana, football is the most popular sport, everybody likes football and it is about how we can also help improve it. With the equipment [and] facilities in the Western world, it is much easy.

“That is our goal, to help people here in Ghana with that, the facilities in the Western world.

“So, for now, we are starting with the academies, or what we call the colts football,” he revealed.

Mr Thompson Antwi further threw some light on having a partnership with a premier league club in Ghana, just as Hearts of Oak did in the past with American side FC Cincinnati.

“The reason why Houston Dynamo has gifted these things [is] partly because I have been pushing for something like that,” he noted.

“They are saying, ‘Ok, let’s give you these things and go donate and let’s start building that relationship for now.

“The more feedback I get to my people at Houston, you never know where this can go, so that’s my main agenda when it comes to the Houston Dynamo in collaboration with any team here in Ghana. I am trying to be that bridge between the Dynamos and Ghana,” he added. “My job is to come out here and expose Ghana to Houston Dynamo and vice versa, then we hope the best will come out soon.”

Houston Dynamo FC is an American professional soccer club based in Houston, Texas, USA.

The Dynamo competes in the Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member of the Western Conference.

Established on December 15, 2005, the club was founded after their former owners relocated the San Jose Earthquakes' players and staff to Houston following the 2005 season.
