There was agitation at the Kwadaso Onion Market in the Kwadaso Municipality of the Ashanti region when a joint police and military force enforced eviction orders against traders.

The Regional Security Council issued directives on Wednesday, 3 April 2024, mandating traders to relocate to the new Atwima Takyiman market by Sunday,21 April 2024, citing concerns over traffic congestion and safety hazards posed by their operations.

Today, Monday, 22 April 2024, armed security personnel supervised the demolition of the market, triggering outrage among the traders who vehemently protested the exercise. 

They voiced grievances over the inadequacy of the allocated space in the new market.

According to the aggrieved traders, the Atwima Takyiman market only offers 18 sheds, significantly fewer than the approximately 150 sheds currently accommodating them. 

They argued that relocating to the new market would jeopardise their businesses.

The Public Relations Officer for the traders, Solomon Kofi Abanga, appealed to the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to intervene in the situation. 

He called for assistance in securing a more suitable location and sufficient time to facilitate a smooth transition from the market.
