Fuel price hikes do not justify transport fare increase – Commercial Transport Operators
The Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana has said the recent increases in fuel prices do not justify an increase in transport fares.
In a statement issued on Thursday, July 16, the group said it had taken note of the latest fuel price adjustments but, after careful deliberations, concluded that the current hikes do not warrant a fare review.
According to the operators, the agreed fare adjustment formula with stakeholders provides that transport fares can only be reviewed when there is a cumulative increase or decrease of at least 10% in fuel prices.
The group also noted that fuel prices had reduced in previous pricing windows, helping to stabilise transport fares, and said any future increase must be balanced against those earlier reductions.
The Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana therefore urged all commercial drivers and transport operators to maintain the current fares.
It said it remains committed to protecting the interests of drivers, passengers and the general public, adding that it will continue to monitor fuel prices and engage the government and other stakeholders as necessary.
