Ghana showcases breakthrough in regional power integration at 2025 West Africa Energy Cooperation summit
Ghana on Tuesday hosted ministers and energy leaders from across the subregion for the 2025 West Africa Energy Cooperation Summit (WAECS) in Accra, where Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, underscored the importance of deeper regional collaboration to enhance energy security and drive economic transformation.
Speaking during the Ministers’ Roundtable at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, Mr. Jinapor announced a major milestone: the first full synchronisation of the West African power grid.
The trial synchronisation, conducted in November 2025 at the Sakete Substation in Benin, successfully connected the Ghana–Togo–Benin network to Nigeria’s grid for the first time.
“This historic synchronisation demonstrates the tangible benefits of regional cooperation and brings us a step closer to a unified West African electricity market,” he said.
The Energy Minister stressed that advancing market integration through the West African Power Pool (WAPP) and harmonising regulatory frameworks will help reduce energy costs, improve supply reliability, and expand electricity access for millions across the region.
Ghana also used the summit to reaffirm its alignment with regional energy priorities, highlighting initiatives such as the expansion of gas infrastructure, deployment of digital technologies in upstream petroleum operations, and enhanced private-sector participation in electricity distribution.
“The time to act is now,” Mr. Jinapor urged. “Let us finalise interconnection protocols, harmonise tariffs, and accelerate joint infrastructure planning.
Together, we can power the dreams of our people,” he concluded
