Importers and Exporters Association kick against planned introduction of AI system at Ghana's ports
The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana has expressed concerns over reports of a planned Artificial Intelligence (AI) system at Ghana's ports, citing data security and revenue assurance risks.
Mr Samson Asaki Awingobit, Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, said the Association questions the award of the contract to Truedare Investments Limited, a Cyprus-registered entity with no verifiable experience in port automation or AI systems.
"We support modernisation, but it must be credible, transparent, and secure," said the Association.
The planned AI system is expected to rely heavily on data from the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS), raising concerns about data sovereignty and cybersecurity risks.
The Association highlights the need for stakeholder engagement, capacity building, and seamless integration with existing systems.
"Ghana must retain full control of customs data and technology core to national trade security," they emphasised.
The Association's concerns come amid improved port performance and revenue mobilisation, with customs revenue increasing to US$3,179,125,238.11 as of September 2025.
The Association calls for continued policy support, including greater foreign exchange availability and sustained reforms to make Ghana's port operations world-class.
