Labour leader sees no wrong in Sammy Gyamfi gifting dollars to Agradaa amid backlash

The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour, Mr Abraham Koomson, has waded into the controversy surrounding a viral video showing the Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board (Goldbod), Sammy Gyamfi, gifting US$800 to Evangelist Patricia Asieduaa Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.
Koomson is urging Ghanaians to desist from politicising the matter, arguing that Gyamfi's actions do not constitute a breach of ethical standards or the Code of Conduct.
Koomson described the situation as "unfortunate" but maintained that the Goldbod CEO committed no wrongdoing.
“I don’t see anything wrong with it. It is unfortunate this happened, but he has not violated any ethics,” Koomson stated.
“They shouldn’t politicise this issue. I see nothing wrong with it... What he did did not violate the Code of Conduct.”
The controversy began after Gyamfi was seen in a widely circulated video giving US$800 in cash to Nana Agradaa, a former fetish priestess turned evangelist.
The gesture sparked significant public backlash, prompting Gyamfi to issue an apology, claiming that his intentions were driven by compassion and support for the needy.
However, not all observers share Koomson's view.
Former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak, has criticised the act, suggesting it could have broader economic implications.
Mubarak argued that such high-profile dollar transactions risk undermining public confidence in the Ghanaian cedi.
“Actions like these send the wrong signal and could be interpreted as a lack of faith in the local currency, despite its recent gains,” Mubarak warned.
The government has since issued a statement through the Office of the President, accepting Gyamfi’s apology but cautioning all public officials to uphold the highest standards of accountability and integrity.
