Despite a directive from former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the release of some 200 million cedis as compensation to communities affected by the Jomorro Petroleum Hub Development Project, the funds remain undisbursed, raising concerns among stakeholders.

The Jomorro Petroleum Hub Development Project, located in the Western Region, was intended to establish a major petroleum and petrochemical hub.

However, delays in compensation payments have sparked worries about the project's impact on affected communities.

Dr. Toni Aubynn, Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation (PHDC), has expressed concerns about the previous government's failure to properly secure the land before launching the project.

Speaking during a meeting with the Western Regional House of Chiefs, Dr. Aubynn assured that the current government remains committed to completing the project despite the setbacks.

He emphasized that effective stakeholder management is essential for the project's success, particularly in engaging host communities. Beyond infrastructure development, PHDC is also focused on training local youth to equip them with the necessary skills to take advantage of employment opportunities once construction begins.

At the sod-cutting ceremony for the first phase of the project on August 19, 2024, former President Akufo-Addo instructed the Finance Ministry to release $200 million as compensation for affected communities.

However, this directive has yet to be implemented.

Traditional leaders in the Western Region remain optimistic about the project's potential to transform the local economy.

The President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, Nana Kobina Nketiah IV, has advocated for the PHDC headquarters to be established in the Western Region, arguing that it would demonstrate the government's commitment to the project and help leverage the region's vast natural resources.
