Artisanal Small-Scale Miners Association in Obuasi

The Artisanal Small-Scale Miners Association in Obuasi has issued a one-week ultimatum to the government, AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine, and the National Chief Imam, demanding decisive action to secure an approved mining site for its members.

The ultimatum comes in the wake of the January 18, 2025, incident in which 9 residents were killed after military officers guarding the AGA concession allegedly opened fire on members of the community.

The group cautioned that they would be compelled to “advise ourselves” if the authorities do not address their concerns within the given timeframe.

Speaking to journalists in Obuasi, the Association’s Secretary, Eugene Annan, voiced frustration over the lack of progress since the incident. He noted that the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, had visited the bereaved families and promised to engage AGA in seeking a peaceful resolution.

Mr Annan also accused security personnel stationed around the mine of continuing to intimidate their members.

He further noted that despite repeated appeals, AGA had not provided any clear timeline for granting a concession to the miners.
