Afrobeats: Why Atlanta-born Davido didn't heed American influences
A fulfilled Davido told Jennifer Hudson on a recent episode of her self-titled TV show, "I've been doing music for the past 12 years."
The Nigerian Afrobeats star had concluded a new and refreshing medley for his megahits Feels and Unavailable when Ms Hudson fondly told him she and her son were his biggest fans.
"After four albums, the first time I got [Grammy] nominated I got three," he remarked.
After the worldwide impact of his music was noted, he was asked what his inspiration was all these years.
Davido's answer underscored his awareness and unassailable love and appreciation for his West African roots and Nigerian culture.
"I was born in Atlanta, I spent part of my life here, but then back home [Nigeria] always inspired me, musically, my food, the way I even speak. Even when we lived out here, and were at home, we always listened to Nigerian music so it's always been [about] my culture - it's always inspired me," the singer-songwriter and music executive said.
"When I decided to do music, I could have done Hiphop, R&B... but I stuck with my culture," the three-time 2024 Grammy nominee explained.
Jennifer Hudson commended Davido for deciding to project his culture through his music.
