Ghanaian actress Fella Makafui has made a startling revelation that she once came close to killing herself under the pressure of public criticism.

The peak of it all, she said, was when bloggers spread a sextape claiming it captured her in an intimate act with a man.

Fella spoke to AJ Sarpong on Accra-based 3FM.

“I really broke down a couple of years ago,” she said. “I almost took my life.”

She noted she is “a very free-spirited person” who “hates to have grudges” and “I always want to have a clear mind”. This, she added, is what makes her productive. However, her problem is she does not explain herself.

Due to this, “when these things come online and I feel like I don’t explain myself,” it starts to eat at her.

With her hand, she touched her neck and said, “at a point, I had it here”.

Revealing what led her to this point, she narrated how her manager once approached her entreating her to be honest if indeed there was a sextape of hers online as some bloggers had alleged.

“I was like, ‘Oh my God, no! I don’t think this part I can take it’,” she ironically laughed, recalling what she said to her manager.

She said, it was the Reggae/Dancehall musician Shatta Wale who “saved” her during this period.

“You know sometimes when they spread so much falsehood about you, something inside you says to you that maybe it is true,” she remarked.

Her mind was playing tricks on her because the “girl” in the said sextape “had the same physique as mine”.

She remembers, being more concerned about the damaging rumour than the veracity of it.

“That day, I was so messed up, I cried and cried and cried,” the entrepreneur said, adding that when she got home “at 11 something [in the evening], Shatta called me and said: ‘Mommy, hey, forget [all they are saying].”

Shatta Wale, according to her, sent her the link to the video and this time watching it, she noticed the girl in the viral video had a tattoo behind her which she in reality did not.

“Apparently, it was some couple on Twitter that showed a video like that,” she noted.

Owing to the weight of the rumour, however, she “felt like just taking my life,” she confessed.

She said “if Shatta Wale hadn’t called” her that day, she may have ended her life.

“So since then,” she said, she has resolved not to “listen to anything people say online” because “they don’t know me”. She was “not going to let them decide or dictate what to do or what not to do” any longer.
