Ghanaian musicians most pitiful in the world – Dada KD laments paltry royalties

“Ghanaian musicians are the most pitiful the world over, and wherever I’ve gone to,” Highlife star Dada KD has lamented.
Guesting on Accra 100.5 FM’s Ayekoo Ayekoo, Nana Romeo had asked about how regular his royalty payments were.
He regretted how music was trivialised and not appreciated for its economic power.
“I don’t know but if it’s destiny, God should change it for us. I don’t know how music is viewed in Ghana. It’s as if it’s for people who have failed in life. It’s as if it’s a foolish sport. It was mostly seen like this until a number of the greats demonstrated music could create wealth,” he said, citing Michael Jackson though dead had made so much money for his family.
Dada KD said he was living a modest life but actively “hustling,” knowing he did not have financial freedom. Though he seemed to admit he did not have the funds to afford his dream Range Rover car, he expressed faith “a year by this town,” things would change.
He bemoaned poor royalty collection systems which was keeping musicians from getting their due in intellectual property (IP) payments.
“If you monitor – even during occasions and or lunch time on radio in Ghana, who doesn’t play Fatia Fata Nkrumah? So at the end of the day if a logging system was available, I’d have many a lot of money from my music,” he said.
