Afenyo-Markin in brawl with police officer

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed ongoing investigations into an alleged assault involving the Majority Leader in Parliament, Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and a police officer during a recent public demonstration.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police said the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) had formally requested the presence of Mr Afenyo-Markin to assist with investigations.

The lawmaker reported to the Police on 7th May 2025 in compliance with the request.

The incident, which has generated significant public interest, allegedly occurred during a demonstration, though specific details remain under investigation.

In a new development, the Police Service also disclosed that it had received a petition from Mr. Afenyo-Markin himself, in which he claims to have been assaulted by the police officer involved in the incident.

According to the Police, both complaints — the alleged assault of the officer and the counter-allegation by the MP — are being investigated concurrently.

"The Ghana Police Service continues its investigation into the case of an alleged assault against a police officer by Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin," the statement noted.

"Investigation has also commenced into a petition received from Mr. Afenyo-Markin alleging he was assaulted by the Police officer concerned."
