Ko-Jo Cue kneeled to thank Ofori Amponsah for unexpected collabo, readied after 12 'grueling' revisions
Rapper Ko-Jo Cue has thanked “my brother” and award-winning sound engineer Peeweezel for making his collaboration with Highlife superstar Ofori Amponsah a reality.
He explained to Prince Benjamin (PB) on Accra 100.5 FM’s Entertainment Capital that Peeweezel was able to get Amponsah to feature on the record because “they had worked together for a while”.
The song, Tontonte, came together with the “vision” to feature music sensation Arathejay and Ofori Amponsah, but the former guest was easier to get than the latter, Cue went on.
He said his producers, Plugnsix, first worked on the music, they got Musical Lunatics bandleader “Nii Quaye to play guitars for it, and I sent that version to Arathejay”.
Upon receiving Arathejay’s performance, he said he forwarded the cut to Peeweezel and asked him to play it to “the legend” Ofori Amponsah “in hopes that he’d perchance grace the song”.
Not knowing whether or not Amponsah would fulfill his dream, Cue said his team readied the song by “mixing and finishing it”.
Another complication was the passing of Highlife icon Daddy Lumba, who was Ofori Amponsah’s mentor.
“There was no room for talking about a collaboration. I was greatly saddened by Lumba’s passing, and so I could only imagine what Ofori Amponsah was going through, given that they walked and worked together,” Ko-Jo Cue explained.
To his surprise, however, a video call from Peeweezel to him, also showed Ofori Amponsah.
“The moment I noticed him, I kneeled down, and took off my cap,” he fondly recalled.
Cue said he exclaimed to Amponsah, “Senior, you won’t understand this but I am very grateful”.
In turn, he said the Highlife veteran told him he “really love the song, and he had done something on it, which would be sent to me”.
With the arrival of Ofori Amponsah’s unexpected vocals, the next challenge was how to creatively add him to the already finished song featuring Arathejay.
The tasteful final cut, out on all streaming platforms since September 23, 2025, was eventually achieved after a “grueling” exercise comprising “12 different arrangements,” ending in Ofori Amponsah taking the intro, post-chorus, bridge, and outro, leaving Arathejay with the chorus and a verse.
“The compromise we had to make was doing a long song but that was the norm back in the day so it was no issue,” he contentedly remarked.
He underlined it was all worth it, urging listeners to give the 4:20-minute song their full attention, “knowing the precious and important things Ofori Amponsah was saying on it”.
