The official music video for Tems’ latest hit, Me & U, has been viewed by 10 million people at publication time.
According to the singer-songwriter and record producer, she created the song – her first in two years –instantly, when she experienced a rush of inspiration.
She was in Accra, Ghana, to shoot the music video for the song which catapulted her to international stardom, Essence, on which she was hosted by Afrobeats superstar Wizkid.
Me & U, a soulful bitter-sweet song which climaxes with a mid-tempo Afrobeats dance groove, was recorded in 2021, “two days after I shot the video for Essence,” Tems said, guesting on a Henrie Kiss Fresh interview.
“And I recorded this song the first time I met the producer Guilty [Beatz],” Tems went on.
She stressed Me & U was a “freestyle,” done the very day they met.
It came about when she asked GuiltyBeatz, a frequent collaborator of Beyoncé’s, for a beat “you think I’d like”.
“I just freestyled – and I’m not joking, the freestyle is the song,” she said. “I freestyled the song with lyrics. I was just zoned out; I was just in another world.”
| In 2021, Tems released an acclaimed five-track EP titled If Orange Was A Place, on which she heavily collaborated with Ronald Banful, alias GuiltyBeatz
Tems contentedly noted she directed the music video for Me & U.
Recalling her time on the set, she said: “It was crazy. I hadn’t slept for like 36 hours when I was on there.”
Notwithstanding, she told herself, “I want to do this more than I am tired.”
