Medikal: Akufo-Addo’s ‘power-drunk’ NPP jailed me ‘for no tangible reason’
Rapper Medikal, alias Samuel Frimpong, has accused the Nana Akufo-Addo New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration of arresting and jailing him without a justifiable reason.
According to the Stubborn Academy hitmaker, this action was taken against him via the Ghana Police Service for a sheer show of power.
Medikal said all attempts by his lawyers to negotiate a release for him through the superiors of the police service fell on deaf ears as they were told in return, their actions were informed by a command a person(s) well above them.
The Beyond Kontrol leader’s X post comes after Ghana went to the polls on December 7, 2024, showing the governing NPP the door and welcoming back into power former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
After decrying President Akufo-Addo’s regime, Medikal had a word for president-elect Mahama.
He underlined while he believed in Mr Mahama, he did not trust him – Medikal did not specify the difference.
He asked Mr Mahama to work assiduously to materialise the change he represented and for which he was favoured at the polls by Ghanaians.
Medikal challenged the NDC leader to work hard in office animated by the thought of safeguarding the future and welfare of his son Sharaf and his generation.
“NPP arrested me for no tangible reason, NPP put me in cells, locked me up in jail (Ankaful maximum security prison) all in the name of power. My lawyers tried to communicate with superiors and all they got in response was, ‘It’s an order from above’,” Medikal wrote on X, December 9.
“Let it be known to the incoming president, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama that, I do not trust him but rather believe in him. Let this new change be exhibited drastically! If not for anything, he should foresee the generation of Sharaf, a good friend of mine (his son), and the betterment of the youth in Ghana and beyond. Thank you.”
In September 2021, Medikal was seen in a Snapchat video showing off what was later revealed to be a Ruger 9mm handgun, while sitting in his vehicle. The police arrested him on October 21, 2021, and later said he admitted to the offense in a statement. However, appearing in court the next day, charged for unlawful display of arms and ammunition, the popular musician pleased not guilty.
His lawyer cited he had no prior criminal record, and was a family man, praying for a bail. It was denied, and he was remanded into prison custody for five days. On October 26, reappearing before the court, he was finally granted a GHS100,000 bail.
