CMG assault

The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has strongly condemned the recent assault on Class Media Group journalist, Samuel Addo, describing the incident as an unacceptable attack on press freedom.

In a statement issued on Monday, PRINPAG said the assault on Mr. Addo, who was reportedly performing his professional duties at the time of the incident, constitutes a direct violation of media freedom as guaranteed under Article 162 of the 1992 Constitution.

The Association noted that any attempt to intimidate, obstruct, or harm journalists in the line of duty undermines Ghana’s democratic principles and threatens the role of the media as a watchdog in society.

PRINPAG has therefore called on the Ghana Police Service and the Ministry of the Interior to carry out a prompt, thorough, and transparent investigation into the incident.

It stressed that those found responsible must be identified and held accountable in accordance with the law.

According to PRINPAG, ensuring justice for Mr. Addo is critical not only for the individual journalist but also as a signal that attacks on media professionals will not be tolerated in a democratic society.

The Association also urged the public and security agencies to recognise and respect the essential role journalists play in national development, noting that media practitioners are key partners in informing the public and promoting accountability.

PRINPAG expressed solidarity with Mr. Addo and journalists across the country, reaffirming its commitment to protecting the rights, safety, and independence of media professionals.

The Association further pledged to continue advocating for a free, safe, and responsible media environment in Ghana.
