Speaker Bagbin calls for culturally authentic dress code in Parliament
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has underscored the need for Members of Parliament (MPs) to embody Ghana’s cultural identity through their choice of attire, stressing that representation extended beyond debate and legislation to include appearance.
Addressing the House, the speaker highlighted that dress codes were not merely fashion choices but expressions of societal values and cultural norms.
He argued that MPs, as representatives of the people, must reflect the traditions and identity of their constituents in all aspects — including how they dressed.
According to Speaker Bagbin, prioritising cultural authenticity over foreign influences was key to strengthening Ghana’s sense of identity and national pride.
He urged lawmakers to embrace local attire as a symbol of unity and respect for the country’s heritage.
He emphasised that Parliament, as the embodiment of the nation’s democratic values, should lead by example by showcasing Ghanaian culture through its dress practices.
The speaker’s remarks form part of a broader call to preserve and celebrate Ghana’s traditions within governance and national affairs.
