'We can build a maintenance culture' – VP Opoku-Agyemang calls for greater role for technicians
Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has called for greater involvement of technicians in the acquisition and maintenance of government equipment, saying Ghana can develop a strong maintenance culture.
Speaking during a visit to the Ministry of the Interior, she said the country should move away from the belief that Ghanaians lack a maintenance culture.
"I don't believe in this statement, 'We don't have maintenance culture.' We can have it," she asserted.
The vice president suggested that technicians should be involved from the beginning whenever equipment is assembled or imported so they fully understand how to maintain it.
According to her, involving technical personnel throughout the procurement process would help extend the lifespan of government equipment and reduce the cost of replacing vehicles and other assets.
She also stressed the need to equip and train technicians to enable them to carry out maintenance effectively.
Prof Opoku-Agyemang said money saved through proper maintenance could be redirected to other priority areas.
