68th Ordinary ECOWAS Summit: President Mahama arrives in Abuja, Nigeria
President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Abuja, Nigeria, to participate in the 68th Ordinary Summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), a key regional meeting that brings together heads of state and government from across the sub-region.
The summit will take place on Sunday, December 14, 2025, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where President Mahama will join his counterparts for the Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority, the highest decision-making body of the regional bloc.
This year’s summit will feature a special debate on the future of the community, reflecting growing concerns about political instability, security threats, and economic challenges facing West Africa. ECOWAS leaders are expected to use the platform to assess the state of the community and chart a new course aimed at strengthening unity, cooperation, and regional resilience.
President Mahama is expected to take part in a closed-door session dedicated to discussions on the strategic direction of ECOWAS, with particular emphasis on political stability, regional security cooperation, and the deepening of economic integration among member states.
The agenda for the summit includes pronouncements on the future of the ECOWAS community, the presentation of the 2025 Annual Report on the State of the Community, and detailed reports on regional security developments, ongoing mediation efforts, and the political transition process in Guinea. Leaders will also review the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS), which is aimed at boosting intra-regional trade and facilitating the free movement of goods and services across member states.
The 68th Ordinary Summit is expected to conclude with the adoption of a final communiqué outlining key decisions and policy directions agreed upon by the authority, followed by a joint press conference at which ECOWAS leaders will brief the media on the outcomes of the meeting.
President Mahama’s presence at the summit underscores Ghana’s continued commitment to regional cooperation, peace, security, and economic integration within the ECOWAS sub-region.
