National Security Cracks Down on Unapproved Transport Fares in Kumasi, Impounds Over 40 Vehicles

National Security operatives have launched a major enforcement operation against commercial drivers charging unapproved transport fares in Kumasi and surrounding districts, impounding more than 40 vehicles in a single day.

The operation, which took place on Monday, January 26, 2026, saw about 80 National Security personnel deployed to key transport hubs, including Sofoline and Santasi Roundabout, as part of efforts to curb arbitrary fare hikes by commercial drivers.

Speaking to Kumasi FM’s Elisha Adarkwah, the Deputy Regional Security Coordinator, Alhaji Alhassan Tapsoba, confirmed that 10 drivers and conductors were arrested for refusing to comply with the legally approved transport fares.

According to him, the exercise was triggered by increasing public complaints over persistent and arbitrary fare increases, particularly during evening hours, which have placed additional financial burden on commuters in Kumasi and its adjoining districts.

Alhaji Tapsoba said those arrested will be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others, stressing that the operation will not be a one-off exercise.

The enforcement exercise has been widely welcomed by members of the public, with many commuters expressing relief at what they described as timely intervention by security agencies. Several commuters urged the operatives to remain consistent, warning that some drivers often return to exploitative practices once enforcement efforts ease.

National Security authorities say they will continue to monitor transport activities in the region to ensure compliance and protect commuters from unlawful fare increases.
