Accra Flood: Seized galamsey excavators to be deployed for nationwide drainage works – Muntaka

Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak

Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has disclosed that 70 excavators confiscated from illegal mining operators will be reassigned to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to support efforts to tackle flooding across the country.

The Minister said the heavy-duty equipment, recovered through ongoing operations against illegal mining activities, will be utilised for an extensive desilting programme aimed at improving drainage networks and mitigating the effects of seasonal flooding.

According to him, the initiative forms part of government's broader strategy to convert assets seized from unlawful activities into resources that serve the public good.

Mr. Muntaka explained that the excavators will be deployed to clear silted drains, waterways and other flood-prone areas, particularly in densely populated urban centres where poor drainage continues to contribute to recurrent flooding.

He noted that the intervention is expected to strengthen flood prevention measures and enhance the capacity of local authorities to respond to drainage challenges before the peak of the rainy season.

The move comes amid growing concerns over persistent flooding in several parts of the country, especially in Accra, where recent heavy rains have caused widespread disruption, property damage and displacement of residents.
